The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has added .post and .travel to its list of allowable domain names. Businesses and groups apparently will have the right to apply for these domain names soon, it's not quite clear just when someone would expect to actually see them live on the web. For more information about the additions, read a recent USA Today story about it.
Of course, most of us are used to using .com, .edu, .org, .gov and even .net. There are a few others that are also not really mainstream, like .net, .biz, .us and .museum. And that's just in America; overseas there are country codes to deal with as well. So is it worth creating more domain name possibilities?
It will be difficult to lure people away from using .com, since most people are comfortable with it, but if you can purchase a simple domain with one of the new choices at the right price, it might be feasible. Just remember that until users are accustomed to the newer domains, they probably won't find your site unless you have a mirror site with a .com address.
