I'm still trying to find that person (or animal) out there who enjoys banner ads, but so far, I've been unsuccessful. Even still, it's difficult to discount the fact that banner ads can be effective, even without clicking on them. If the ad has been cleverly designed to resonate with Internet users, then possibly it has done the job.
That cannot be said for what was allegedly the first banner ad, brought to us in 1994 by AT&T. Maybe it was interesting at the time, just because it didn't go with anything else on HotWired, where it first appeared. But besides been psychedelic, it has no real value to it.
Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you want to look at it), banner ads have improved. Of course, many of us are blocking them, but that's a different story.
