It's springtime, and baseball season, the best season of the year, has begun once again. It's too early to tell who will make it to the playoffs, but it is clear that no team will win all of its games or lose all of its games. In fact, the Mets have the best record at this stage, but without Doc Gooden and Darryl Strawberry, it's hard to see them in the World Series.
While the players are playing, many fantasy baseball owners are busy scrutinizing over statistics from this year, last year and possibly as far back as the late 1490s, before baseball was invented, and Christopher Columbus lead the league in stolen land, er, bases.
I recently came across a central repository of baseball statistics called Baseball-DataBank.org, which dates back to 1871, after Abraham Lincoln was out of the league. The site isn't much to look at, but it contains useful stats, assuming that you can find some worth out of it. There's a MySQL data dump of yearly and postseason stats, player and manager data, awards, etc. I'm still looking for a place that has all the yearly boxscores and possibly mascot names, but at least this is a start.
