Final stop: Evansville and Owensboro

"The Developers" book tour is almost over, at least, for now. I will be signing and discussing the book 12-2 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Evansville Barnes & Noble (624 S Green River Rd). He will then make his final stop 4-6 p.m. at the Owensboro Books-A-Million (4606 Frederica Street).

These cities will be the 10th and 11th during my tour. I have had a lot of fun and have met a lot of people, many of whom are totally insane. At least I have pegged my audience correctly!

Hail, hail old Purdue!

I finally returned to the Purdue campus during the weekend, and it didn't take me long to realize how much I missed it. Even though it has been five years, and a plethora of new buildings have gone up all across Lafayette and West Lafayette, there were still plenty of things to reminisce about.

Just when you thought you had everything you needed to have a great weekend (well, minus a date and money for that date), there are a few things for your computer that you probably don't have.

Then again, some of these things, it's probably better that you don't have them.

One Web. One World. One Wish.

How has the web changed your life? That's the question that users around the world are answering today to celebrate OneWebDay.

First off, who would have thought to combine capitalized words, minus the spaces, for the name of something anyway? Yes, it was used before the Internet for various things, including the names of racehorses. OneWebDay, even the word form itself, has become something due to this rapidly advancing form of technology.

Book events at Purdue, Lafayette Barnes & Noble next

While it's fairly simple to find just about anything on the Internet, author Ben Woods says there's one thing that sticks out the most: crazy people.

Woods will be signing and discussing his new fictional workplace humor book, "The Developers," 2-4 p.m. Sept. 29 in the Lawson Commons area in the new Lawson Computer Science Building (305 N. University St.). He will also take part in the Barnes and Noble Authors Day 4-7 p.m. Sept. 30 in Lafayette (2323 Sagamore Parkway South).

Watch for extra charges at the Waverly post office branch

While the United States Post Office seems to be losing money each month, at least one Baltimore branch has decided to take matters in its own hands - by charging extra postage at random intervals.

The Waverly branch of the Baltimore United States Post Office charges an additional 17-44 cents for an article of mail that can be sent from the USPS Hampden branch for just 44 cents. It's pretty shocking that one would receive a different rate from various post office branches. Before compiling this story, I had to check with my own eyes to make certain this was accurate.

Are there things too obvious to study?

It's rather easy to assume you know something, especially if it's based on previous knowledge that you are familiar with. And there is oftentimes a level of obviousness in certain things that make questioning particular items unnecessary. But at what length would you go to be 100 percent positive something is true?

I guess it's about time for an update

I certainly had High Hopes for writing more on this website last year. I suppose it's easiest to blame it on the pandemic, but that wouldn't be completely accurate.

Figs are fun

It is really remarkable that after writing online stories for 25 years, I have a topic today that I’ve both never written about and something I know more about than almost anything else.

That thing is figs.

How did we get to this point? My uncle had a fig tree in his backyard, and we lived at his house 16 years ago. Coincidentally, my father-in-law also had fig trees, so when we bought a new house 14 years ago, we accepted a gift of a fig cutting and planted it in an auspicious backyard location.
