News Corp going 2002 and charging for all content

Aug 10, 2009

Rupert Murdoch, the only reason I can think of that you would change all of the News Corporation websites to a pay-for-content model is that you got your hand stuck in the intertubes.

Are you trying to limit the amount of traffic to your websites? Would you prefer that only rich people read your content? Do you think people will pay not with money, but with Coke Rewards points?

It's a big gamble to attempt to exhort, I mean, request money for content that is free on other websites. Sure, there will be some original and exclusive content available for a price. Maybe Murdoch and the gang think other sites will follow suit.

I'd like to send out a special bulletin: THIS DOESN'T WORK.

Have these guys checked out any other media, ever? The money comes from advertising, not subscription, unless you have extremely exceptional content. Maybe they're trying to change their business structure, but this isn't what they have right now. Regardless, it will be interesting to see how long this last ... or maybe they'll just change their minds before starting. Besides, 100 points will get them free Cokes, so that might be a better plan.
